Recent years have seen an explosion of hundreds of social networking sites. Social networking technologies are applications that enable the process of connecting people based on social ties and bonds. These websites are a virtual meeting place for friends, classmates, coworkers and people with similar interests, connections or affiliations. The ability to gather people from different countries and cultures into a community, share content and interact with them had interested not only individuals and organizations but also educational institutions. Nowadays, the irruption of the Information and Communication Technologies in the educational field has become a visible reality. Like other web-based services, there is a mass conglomeration of social networking websites springing up on the Internet.
At the university level, the relation become gradually more apparent since many universities dive into developing or adopting high-level technology tools to achieve an efficient learning, a wide notoriety or to build their own virtual campus.
This Master’s project consists of creating a social network for the international students in the University of Murcia in order to remain in contact with the beneficiaries of the EUMN program after its termination. The resulting project will allow eventual users to exchange their international experiences, share information and reconnect with their friends.
The EUMN Social Network was developed using the social networking engine Elgg. All the relevant features of a social network were implemented and were extended to comply more with the outlined requirements. In the other hand, focus has been placed on the internationalization aspects to be incorporated in the website to provide an internationalized environment to overcome culture and language barriers and allow tolerance and cross-cultural communication prevail.
